Resistance of a parallel connection

Easy 10 grade Electricity / Electric Current

Two resistors of resistance $R_1 = 6$ ohm and $R_2 = 6$ ohm are connected in parallel. Find the total resistance of the combination.

Given
  • $R_1 = 6$ ohm
  • $R_2 = 6$ ohm
  • $R = ?$
Hints
Hint 1 / 2
For two resistors in parallel: $R = R_1R_2/(R_1 + R_2)$.
Hint 2 / 2
With equal resistances the total is half of each.
Solution

For a parallel connection:

$$R = \frac{R_1 R_2}{R_1 + R_2} = \frac{6 \cdot 6}{6 + 6} = \frac{36}{12} = 3 \text{ ohm}$$

Answer

$R = 3$ ohm
